In the absence of Professor Huxley's long promised manual of the elements of physiology, Mr. Angell's little volume may be read with advantage by those who desire to be made acquainted with the rudiments of the science of life. A great many works of a similar class have been published from time to time during the last three or four years, of which two, Dr. Lawson's popular manual and Mr. Shea's work, deserve attention. The former is intended for general readers, and though quite up to the date of its publication in point of scientific accuracy, it is written in too discursive a style for the purposes of the serious reader. The latter is defective from the circumstance that its author, in attempting to introduce comparative physiology, has made some serious omissions of matters of great importance to the student of human physiology. Neither of the disadvantages referred to present themselves in the present work. Mr. Angell has produced a well written little treatise, which, though it is in some instances far from being in accordance with the recent progress of science, is still sufficiently accurate for the purposes of the beginner. What we most object to is the want of system which the writer displays, and the negligence he has shown in slurring over the important questions of development. In treating of the structure of the tissues, he has simply followed the account given in the older editions of Dr. Carpenter's work, and his account of the cell shows that he is in painful ignorance of the writings of Huxley, Beale, and Wolff on this
